Today's News [10 Mar 2006|09:57am]

This was in Today's newspaper (I got it from the Hamilton Spectator, but it was probably in a lot of other places too)
-------------------------------------------
Canadian Tire retires couple

The Canadian Press
TORONTO (Mar 10, 2006)
The Canadian Tire couple is no more.

When the retailer unveiled its new spring ad campaign yesterday, the bearded handyman Ted and his wife Gloria were nowhere to be seen.

The famous pitch-couple had been showing off innovative products for the hardware chain for almost a decade.

Loved by some and hated by many, the couple had transcended advertising into the realm of pop culture, where they were parodied by the likes of Royal Canadian Air Farce and This Hour has 22 Minutes.

Tracy Fellows, a vice president of advertising at Canadian Tire Corp., said the couple's "demo-mercials" were effective.

But internal research showed that they were starting to wear on consumers by late last year, the Globe and Mail's online service reported.

"Though those demo-mercials were extremely successful for us over the last eight years, it was time for us to move on," Fellows said.

"And try to build more of an integrated program between the brand spots and the pro-duct spots working closer together."

The new Canadian Tire campaign will make its debut during Saturday's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.

One spot features a couple covetously eyeing their neighbours' back yard.

As they imagine the things they could do with their own yard, Canadian Tire signs appear in different parts of the yard, indicating the aisle numbers where different products can be found.

Other ads will continue to highlight specific products, but in a more humorous, less earnest way than the Canadian Tire couple spots.

"We've injected a little more wit, a little personality, a little charm -- something that we felt was missing," said Lance Martin, associate creative director at Taxi Advertising and Design.

The new ads mark the first Canadian Tire campaign for Taxi, which replaced Doner Canada as the retailer's agency last year.

I can't stand this tool (pun intended) so I had to join. Although it would be handy if every time I was doing yard work my neighbour with a creepy bread came out of nowhere with something helpful from CT.

I came across this video randomly, and I hadn't seen it before, but it's hilarious.

The Canadian Tire couple on Air Farce.
(if that link doesn't work, go here and scroll down to "Canadian Tire Couple Visit")

Also, this is pretty funny.

Finally, check it out: new community icons!

CANADIAN TIRE GUY ON OTR [14 Dec 2005|12:47pm]

Many thanks to ft_7 for the tip off about our dear Ted being on TSN's Off The Record. I managed to catch the rerun at noon, and oh, it was hilarious. I recorded bits and pieces of it (had to conserve, since I was using the end of a tape) and if I knew how to put them online, I would, but I'm afraid I don't. :( Still, let me fill you in on what happened:

- they were discussing Cujo
- Ted didn't contribute to the discussion very much, except for one comment: "Everything he touches turns to gold." Ahahahahaha.
- then they all turned to Ted and asked him about his reign as the Canadian Tire king of commercials, and one man told him that his son was looking a little overweight.
- HE SANG THE SONG!!1 ("I'll start with you")
- and made an oh-so-witty comment about a man who was hypothetically stranded on his boat in the middle of a lake.

But yes. He shaved his beard!! It's gone! Still, he didn't seem to say he'd stopped doing the commercials, so maybe the beard's on hiatus, just like Ted.

Canadian Tire Guy TV spot... [14 Dec 2005|01:31am]

Ted Simonett appeared on OTR on TSN today. I think you can still catch reruns during the morning. He didn't say much, but the beard is gone...

Random linkage... [12 Nov 2005|04:17pm]

[ mood | hungry ]

So I've been trying to find a little bit of information on our friend, Ted. Some random searches around the 'net ended in . . .

- Carlsberg: Carlsberg strikes me as the kind of beer the punchably smug Canadian Tire Guy would drink (real name: Ted Simonette). And that's all I have to say about that.

a little quote from an article about the Mondial de la bière

- This chain of comments which is actually pretty goddamned funny.

The guy in the Canadian Tire ads?? Noooo, it’s the woman who is such an irritating witch…laughing as the guy’s water jug rolls down the road, playing her boring video during the camping trip, taking off on the four wheeler when the husband had planned to…

- This very bitter entry from some guy who has seemingly had a rough childhood, and therefore writes a (kind of oddly serious) entry about how the Canadian Tire Guy is taking credit for other people's ideas ... Calm down there buddy, he's just a guy with a beard.

Other than that, I've found some information that Canadian Tire recently switched ad companies, and it isn't likely that many more commercials with Ted will be made anymore... Now, I don't like the guy, but I do dislike him in such a way that anything he does is just absolutely hilarious to me because I know it's going to get spoofed or torn to shreds. So if it's true I'm really kind of upset...

He also has a confidentiality agreement in regards to his Canadian Tire character... That's why there's no information on him or anything. I wonder since his contract has (possibly?) ended, if he'd be able to take interviews... How awesome would he be to get an interview with? I think it'd be great.

Since there seems to be so many Rick fans as well, I think it'd be great if Rick interviewed him.

Okay I'll stop posting now. XD

Did anyone watch This Hour has 22 Minutes tonight? I'm not sure if it was a repeat (I guess no?), but they mocked the Canadian Tire guy.

Basically, he was out in his yard and his neighbor comes by and is all, "Hey... my wife's dead..."
And the Canadian Tire guy just goes on about his tools. The only thing I remember specifically, is he suggested this one to make sure her tombstone was aligned right (LOL) The neighbor goes on about not knowing what he'll do, or tell the kids, and when he says he needs to go, Canadian Tire guy is all, "Say hi to your wife for me!" and the neighbor starts crying more XD

I could totally see this happening XD He's such a freak!

GASP.

Canadian Tire Guy's wife's IMDb profile has her picture! How come she gets a picture, and Ted gives us nothing? I feel cheated. Sobs.

By the way, as was mentioned in the previous post, Ted was in Police Academy 4! Anyone think a Blockbuster/Rogers would have a copy? I suddenly want to include that film in a movie night.

Just wanted to give a shout out.

I saw this plugged at the McMaster University community, so I dropped by. I HATE THIS MAN. Why is there only one man in the entire country who seems to have the answers to everything? And if there *is* only one man, why the hell isnt it my father, who I've actually *SEEN* using tools successfully? (and who doesnt buy them at the tire...)

*ahem*

Anyways, love the idea, not sure how active it'll get, but I'll pass it onto people like my boyfriend who also find the commercials laughable.

Canadian Theatre page for Ted Simonett - INCLUDING OMG A PICTURE OF HIM WITHOUT THE BEARD

Rick Mercer's Monday Report - if you scroll down to the Week Of November 8th, 2004, click on "The all new Yard-a-rizer from Canadian Tire"

Excerpts from the diary of the Canadian Tire Guy - FUNNY STUFF.

Toronto Sun article.

blog entry - "Who Shot The Bearded Guy?"

a random thread that rips at poor Ted

Yeaaaaaah, I think I need to sleep. Luckily, today's my day off. Cheers!
